Swan and Cygnet Flock to Pebble Beach Resorts For 62nd Annual Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (July 23, 2012) — A dramatic yet delicate 1910 Brooke 25/30 HP motor car, designed with more than a bit of whimsy to resemble an elegant Swan, left its lovely nest at the Louwman Museum in The Hague a few days ago and is now gliding across the great Atlantic.

The Swan and its companion, a miniature Cygnet, are among several dozen automobiles residing outside of the United States now making their way across seas and continents to converge at Pebble Beach Resorts and compete in the forthcoming Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 19.

In addition to cars from India, Argentina, Hong Kong, Thailand, all over Europe and other countries, cars also hail from the far corners of the United States, from Alaska and Hawaii to New Hampshire and Florida.

“The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is its own moveable museum,” says Chairman Sandra Button. “It magically appears for just one day each year on the 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links. We are committed to inviting only the most magnificent cars to appear here, and their owners graciously ship these jewels from all around the world to share with other enthusiasts.”

As Evert V. N. Louwman, the owner of the Swan and Cygnet, explains, “We would like to share these treasures with as many people as possible all over the world. Besides their home at the Louwman Museum at The Hague, I cannot think of a better place than Pebble Beach to show them to the public.”

The journey of the Swan car began a full two months prior to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance when it left its home at the Louwman Museum in The Netherlands and was carefully prepared and packed in a shipping crate for the month-long voyage at sea. It is now being tracked with GPS until its arrival at the Port of Oakland in California. With less than a month until the big day, the car will be unpacked from its crate, meticulously inspected for damages and prepped for the show field before it rolls onto the famed 18th fairway of Pebble Beach Golf Links for all the world to see.

The Swan was commissioned by Scotsman Robert Nicholl Matthewson, who lived in India in the early 1900s and sought to emulate the opulence exhibited by some of the maharajas. Built to draw attention, the car is modeled after the majestic bird and equipped with very special features: eyes that illuminate; a beak that opens, closes and sprays steam; and an eight-tone horn. Draw attention it did: the Maharaja of Nabha soon purchased this creation, built a miniature Cygnet as a companion to it, and the pair remained with his family for more than 70 years. The Cygnet is believed to be the oldest Indian-made automobile in the world.
