2019 Pebble Beach Tour D’Elegance Poster

August 5, 2019

In an homage to 100 years of Carrozzeria Zagato coachwork, the 2019 Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance poster highlights three of Zagato’s greatest works: the focus is on an 1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ1 owned by David and Erin Eichenbaum, and an Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 and an Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato are also included. Tim Layzell, now rightly regarded as one of the world’s leading motoring artists, depicts these three cars driving away from the Bixby Canyon Bridge on the beautiful highway that is such a highlight of the Tour.

The Alfa Romeo TZ1 Zagato Coupé was developed in collaboration with Autodelta, Alfa Romeo’s competition department, led by ex-Ferrari engineer Carlo Chiti. The TZ1 featured Alfa’s 1.6-liter twin cam engine, as used in the 105 series Alfa Romeo GTA, which propelled the car to a top speed of around 150 mph. The Zagato rear bodywork has a cut-off Kamm tail designed by Dr. Wunibald Kamm and called “Coda Tronca,” meaning short tail in Italian. The Alfa TZs were extremely successful, winning their class at Le Mans, Sebring, the Nürburgring, the Targa Florio, and the Coupe des Alpes. This car (chassis TZ 016) was owned initally by Lou Mellon in Los Angeles and was driven in Sports Car Club of America races throughout 1964. It has an almost unbroken competition history over the last 55 years.
